A report (received 23-12-2002) from Andy Hodgkinson following Mal's heart attack...

The old reprobate is now out of hospital & at home. He’s had a quadruple by-pass, and he goes back to the hospital in the next couple of weeks for a progress check-up type thingy. He’s got huge scars, from where they went nicking veins to rebuild him; and bits of ironwork and tubing bouncing around inside him, as souvenirs of the work they did. They told him that he must be quite used to this, as he’d had them before, which rather surprised him, as he thought this was his first heart attack. He says that on reflection (and now knowing what he’s looking for), he can think of 6 occasions when he’s felt a bit iffy. Sounds like he’s been a smidgeon lucky.  Anyway, I did ask him if he’d given up smoking, and he said “that decision was made in the ambulance on the way, mate!” See, he’s lost none of that blunt humour. I’m sure he’ll be dining out on stories about it for some time to come.

Now retired, he can spend more time fishing, recently catching a seventeen & a half pounder.
